EKU TENNIS TEAMS COMPLETE SEASON IN OVC TOURNAMENT

RICHMOND, Ky. - The Eastern Kentucky University men's and women's tennis teams completed their spring seasons this past weekend with an appearance in the annual Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.

EKU's women's team was able to finish sixth in the OVC Tournament after entering the tournament as the No. 6 seed. Eastern defeated Austin Peay, 6-1, while losing matches to Tennessee Tech, 5-1, and to Morehead State, 5-3.

On the 2000 season, Eastern was paced by freshman Kelli Williams at No. 6 singles who compiled the best individual record for the year with her mark of 15-6. Other winning records this season were turned in by junior Tara Williams at No. 3 singles (12-8) and freshman Sandy Swanepoel at No. 2 singles (11-8).

EKU's women's team, 9-9 overall and 4-4 in the OVC, was led in doubles play by the No. 3 unit of K. Williams - Andie Hill who closed the year at 16-6. The No. 2 doubles team of Swanepoel - T. Williams was 12-8 on the season.

The Colonel men's team fell short in all three of its OVC Tournament matches, losing to Tennessee Tech (5-0), Murray State (4-0) and Eastern Illinois (4-1). Eastern closed the tournament in eighth place.

Gaining individual victories for EKU this weekend were the No. 2 (Lee Lester - Christian Lentz) and No. 3 (Jason Crutchfield - Daniel Dodson) doubles teams who defeated Eastern Illinois.

EKU's men's team finished the year 2-18 overall and 2-5 in the OVC.
